Law Firm SEO: A 2026 Guide for UK Solicitors

Most guides to law firm SEO are written for American attorneys, or they are general SEO advice with the word solicitor dropped in. We read three of the UK guides currently ranking for these terms before writing this one, and all three mention regulation only in passing. None of them explain how the SRA Transparency Rules change what belongs on your website, which is a strange omission, because the pages the SRA already requires you to publish answer some of the highest volume questions your future clients are typing into Google. This is SEO for solicitors as it works in UK search results in September 2026, built on real search data rather than rules of thumb.

Why Legal SEO Works Differently in the UK

Three things separate a law firm from almost every other business trying to rank. You are regulated by the SRA, so paragraph 8.8 of the Code of Conduct requires your publicity to be accurate and not misleading, and certain information has to sit on your website whether you find it useful or not. Google also treats legal questions as the kind of topic where it says it gives more weight to experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, because the answers affect people's money, homes and families.

The practical effect is that a lot of standard SEO advice does not survive contact with a regulated profession, and law firm SEO has to start from what you are allowed to publish. You cannot promise outcomes, invent statistics, or buy your way into a map pack. What you can do is answer real questions better than anyone else in your area, and make it easy for an anxious person to check that you are who you say you are.

SEO for Solicitors Splits Into Two Kinds of Search

Look at what Google actually returns for legal queries and the market splits cleanly in two. Searches that name a service and a buyer, such as conveyancing solicitors or divorce solicitors, return a map pack, so your Google Business Profile and your local relevance decide whether you are seen at all. Searches about cost and timescales return an AI Overview, so the question becomes whether Google can use your page as a source.

Search volumes are Ahrefs UK estimates and the result types come from a September 2026 snapshot, so both will move. The pattern is the part worth keeping, because it decides where legal SEO effort goes: your money pages fight inside a map pack, and your question pages fight an AI answer.

Your Transparency Rules Pages Are Already SEO Pages

Since 6 December 2018 the SRA Transparency Rules have required firms to publish price and service information for a defined list of work. Rule 1.6 says it must be clear, accessible and in a prominent place on your website. Rule 1.5 sets out what goes in it: the total or range of costs, the basis of your charges, disbursements, VAT, what the price includes, the key stages, likely timescales, and the experience and qualifications of the people doing the work and their supervisors.

Read that list again as a marketer rather than as a compliance officer. It describes precisely the page somebody searching how much does probate cost is hoping to find, and that one search runs at roughly 1,700 a month in the UK, with probate fees adding another 1,500. Treating these rules as a footer obligation means publishing your most commercially useful content where nobody will ever see it. It is the most underused asset in UK law firm SEO.

Make the price page a real page

Publish it as an ordinary web page rather than a PDF, one page per service, with the figures in text that Google can read. Answer the question in the first paragraph, show what is included and excluded, give the key stages and timescales the rules already require, and name the solicitor who does the work. That single change turns a compliance chore into the page most likely to be quoted back inside an AI Overview. It is the cheapest win available in legal SEO.

The rules are also moving. The SRA consulted on making first tier complaints information more prominent, then ran a further consultation that closed on 1 September 2026, and has said final proposals will go to the Legal Services Board. Plan for these requirements to tighten rather than relax.

Build the Site Around Practice Areas, Then Offices

A firm doing conveyancing, family and employment work is running three different law firm SEO problems, and one combined services page serves none of them. Each practice area needs its own substantial page, and the bigger areas need child pages for the specific jobs people search for. Only once those exist is it worth building pages for the places you work.

criminal defence solicitors1,300
solicitors manchester1,000

We pulled the UK results for solicitors manchester in September 2026 to see how that plays out. Below the map pack, most of page one was office pages belonging to multi office firms, each written for that city rather than a single contact page listing every location. A firm with an Ahrefs Domain Rating of 7, which is very low, still held eighth place, and the review platform ReviewSolicitors held sixth with a list of top Manchester firms.

Two lessons follow. Give every genuine office its own page, with its own team, phone number and local detail rather than a swapped place name. Then accept that directories and review platforms will hold part of page one, which makes your profiles on them part of your legal SEO rather than an afterthought.

Make Your Expertise Checkable

Google says it gives more weight to content with strong experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust for topics that can significantly affect financial stability, and it adds that trust is the most important of the four. In law firm SEO that means less about writing longer articles and more about making every claim verifiable in a couple of clicks.

What checkable looks like on a legal website:

  • Name the author on every substantive page and link the byline to a profile, which is exactly what Google asks for when it says bylines should lead to further information about the author
  • Put qualifications, admission date and practice areas on that profile, and keep it consistent with your entry on the Law Society Find a Solicitor directory
  • Show your SRA number and the SRA digital badge in a prominent place, which rule 4.1 requires and which has been mandatory since 25 November 2019
  • Display the Law Society accreditations you genuinely hold, and nothing you do not
  • Date the page and say when it was last reviewed, because legal content goes stale in ways a plumbing page never does
  • Give real detail on process, cost and timescales instead of generic reassurance, since that is what somebody comparing three firms is reading for

Local SEO for Solicitors Decides the Commercial Searches

Google is unusually direct about this. It says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Distance is fixed by where the searcher is standing, which leaves relevance and prominence, and most firms leave both half finished.

  • One Google Business Profile for each real office, with categories that match the work you actually take on
  • No virtual offices, because Google's guidelines make them ineligible and a suspended profile takes weeks to recover
  • Complete hours, services and a description written for clients rather than for keywords
  • A steady flow of reviews, since Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking
  • The same name, address and phone number on your website, your profile and the legal directories

Local Services Ads deserve a footnote, because they sit above everything else on the page. Google lists its lawyer categories for the UK as currently available in Greater London only, screened through active Solicitors Regulation Authority or Bar regulation membership and professional indemnity insurance. Outside London this is not yet an option, so paid visibility still means ordinary Google Ads.

Reviews: What the SRA Actually Allows

Firms often assume confidentiality makes reviews impossible. SRA guidance on engaging with online reviews, updated on 30 September 2024, says you can use positive reviews and quotes on your website or in email marketing, and that you can respond to reviews provided you do not disclose confidential or privileged information.

That is more permissive than most partners expect, and it matters twice over, because reviews feed both your map pack prominence and the judgement a prospective client makes in about ten seconds. That makes review generation part of solicitor SEO rather than a separate reputation project. Ask at the natural end of a matter, keep the request simple, and never invite anyone to describe their case. When you reply to a critical review, say nothing about that person's circumstances and offer to continue the conversation privately.

Three ways firms get this wrong

Fake reviews and undisclosed incentivised reviews became a banned practice when the consumer provisions of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 came into force on 6 April 2025. The SRA warning notice of 19 December 2024 expects you to be able to demonstrate that a third party who referred a client did not acquire that client through cold calling, which is worth checking before you buy leads from anybody. Paragraph 8.9 of the Code still prohibits unsolicited approaches to members of the public, although SRA guidance confirms that untargeted online and social advertising is fine.

Measure Enquiries by Practice Area, Not Traffic

Total sessions tell a law firm almost nothing, because a conveyancing enquiry and a commercial dispute enquiry are worth wildly different amounts. Track enquiries and calls by practice area and by office, record which ones became instructions, and let that decide where next quarter's work goes. Judge law firm SEO on instructions won by practice area rather than on a traffic graph, or you will end up optimising for the cheapest work you do.

A sensible first 90 days of law firm SEO:

  1. 1Audit your Transparency Rules pages against rule 1.5 and rewrite them as real pages rather than PDFs.
  2. 2Give every practice area its own page, then split the big ones into the jobs people actually search for.
  3. 3Add named solicitor bylines and profiles, with your SRA number and digital badge displayed prominently.
  4. 4Claim and complete a Google Business Profile for each genuine office.
  5. 5Write one plain English guide for the question clients ask most, such as how long probate takes.
  6. 6Build a review request into your file closing process, within what the SRA guidance allows.
  7. 7Fix name, address and phone consistency across your site, your profiles and the legal directories.
  8. 8Set up call and form tracking so every enquiry is attributed to a practice area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SEO work for law firms?

Yes, and the UK search data makes the case for law firm SEO plainly. Conveyancing solicitors is searched roughly 9,700 times a month and how long does probate take roughly 9,600, while the CMA found that only 22% of consumers compared providers before choosing one, which rewards whoever is visible and credible first. The firms that struggle are usually those competing nationally for terms owned by large brands instead of winning their own towns and practice areas.

How long does law firm SEO take to work?

Google Business Profile work can shift local visibility within weeks. Practice area pages and guides usually take several months to settle, and conveyancing in a large city takes considerably longer than niche work in a smaller town. Anyone promising fixed rankings by a fixed date is selling something Google states it does not sell.

What does law firm SEO cost in the UK?

It depends on how many practice areas and offices you are trying to win rather than on a standard package. A single office firm targeting two practice areas in one town is a very different budget from a five office firm covering conveyancing, family and employment. The useful comparison is cost per enquiry against the value of an instruction in that practice area, which is why we quote after reviewing your pages and your local competition.

Do the SRA Transparency Rules affect SEO?

They help, if you let them, and they are the most overlooked part of SEO for solicitors. Since 6 December 2018 firms have had to publish price and service information for work including residential conveyancing, uncontested probate on UK assets, summary road traffic offences, unfair and wrongful dismissal claims, debt recovery up to £100,000 and licensing applications for business premises. Rule 1.5 requires costs, what is included, key stages, timescales and the qualifications of the people doing the work, which is the same information people want when they search probate fees or conveyancing costs.

Can solicitors ask clients for Google reviews?

Yes. SRA guidance updated on 30 September 2024 says firms can use positive reviews and quotes in their marketing and can respond to reviews, provided no confidential or privileged information is disclosed. Ask at the end of a matter, never invite a client to describe their case, and remember that fake or undisclosed incentivised reviews have been a banned practice in the UK since 6 April 2025. Done properly, reviews are one of the few parts of SEO for solicitors that pays back within weeks.
